Paper Abstract:      Background: Nursing students complete five periods of clinical practice in the course of their education. The practice field is responsible for supervision and assessment. The University College has the formal responsibility to establish learning outcomes and criteria for evaluation as well as safeguarding study progression throughout the program. Teachers participate in three meetings called expectation talk, mid-term and final evaluation. Long travelling distances between campus and municipalities results in challenges related to logistics and inefficient use of resources. The project objective was to investigate whether synchronous web-conference systems can replace face-to-face meetings. Methods: Practice research, with an inductive qualitative approach. Online meetings replaced face-to-face meetings for 15 nursing students in their regular periods of practice learning. Data were collected through focus group interviews and analyzed by qualitative content analysis Findings: Three main concerns were identified. 1. Prerequisite dependency: online availability, computer equipment and technical support were not present. 2. Added value: increased flexibility, efficiency and resource savings. 3. Interaction between the participants was affected. Conclusion: Use of synchronous web-conference in tutoring and assessment provides benefits. Online meetings affect the interaction between participants; communication can be inhibited and important information may be lost. Technical problems can prevent online meetings from replacing face-to-face meetings.
