Paper Abstract:
|
This paper describes a project which explored the use of Short Message Services (SMS) for examination preparation in a
first year Film and Media course at a higher education institution (HEI). During preparation for examination, students
study in isolation and become aware of aspects of a course or concepts for which they have questions, but the immediate
supportive environment is unavailable. Motivated by the fact that 99% of students at this institution own mobile phones,
an anonymous consultation environment with a seamless web and SMS interface, was designed for use by students on
and off campus. The paper reports on how students used SMSes during examination preparation. The paper concludes
that during examination preparation, students were mostly off-campus and used SMS more frequently to receive help
from peers and teaching staff compared to term time. |
