Paper Abstract:      The possibility of developing more interactive and innovative applications led to an explosion in the amount of systems available on the web in which users interact with each other and have a primary role as producers of content — the so-called social software. These systems have been seen as both opportunities and challenges for commercial companies as well as for governmental institutions and researchers from several fields. In the educational technology area, social software is frequently pointed out as a possible solution to problems of the traditional applications and approaches, and the promise of a really interactive and collaborative learning environment. However, despite their popularity, few of these systems keep an effective participation of users, promoting a continuous and productive interaction. This paper reviews the existing literature on social software in order to revisit its concept and presents the 13 most commonly discussed elements that, according to researchers and practitioners, afford the social aspect of these systems and can be determinant of their success. A research agenda on the social software area is also suggested.
