Paper Abstract:
|
The Mobile Digital Narrative Approach (mobileDNA) is a methodology to support collaborative creativity among a
group of distributed participants engaged in the creation of a collective multimedia Digital Narrative (DN) entirely shot
on mobile phones. The approach encompasses the entire process from idea generation to final production. It utilizes
devices such as mobile phones, laptops, public displays, and interactive whiteboards and proprietary applications such as
a concept-mapping tool, the mobile phones native media capture and transfer tools, a Multimedia Messaging Service
(MMS) gateway, a file explorer and a movie editor. While the mobileDNA successfully scaffolds and enables the
creation of a DN, in approximately four hours, and brings about collaborative creativity among participants, the
alternation of and transition across disparate applications is a somewhat cumbersome endeavour. This paper presents the
design of the Digital Narrative Tool (DNT), a single shared integrated application, mobile and PC versions,
encompassing the suite of tools required to support the mobileDNA. The integration of the various tools, the mobile and
PC versions, the automation of tasks such as data transfer and file management, and the shared information and resources
contribute towards further enhancing the learners experience by supporting seamless transitions within and across
dimensions of mobility when creating DNs. The design presented is the result of a series of case studies conducted over
two years with more than 200 participants. |
