Paper Abstract:
|
Engineers must be able to communicate about their work in writing and are thus interested in taking courses that will help them to that effect. Various approaches to teaching writing have had varied success. This paper reports a study in which a combined approach was used for teaching writing to doctoral students in engineering. Students were taught the main types of texts they need in their work as doctoral students and engineers (from the genre approach). In addition, they were encouraged to write e-mail logbooks (from the process approach). Students report that writing e-mail logbooks helped them not only improve their writing in English, but also helped them develop in their discipline, especially with regard to finding focus in their doctoral projects. Through the e-mail dialogue they establish with their reader/teacher, they reflect upon their work and establish their position in their academic discipline. |
