Paper Abstract:
|
Legal procedures for checking regulatory compliance and resolving disputes are often time-consuming, costly and
complicated. Similar obstacles to legal services are also faced by citizens and eBusinesses in eSocieties but with
increased complexity, due to the greater operational scope afforded by digital economies. We believe that such obstacles
can be avoided through technology that facilitates engagement with the relevant legal procedures within electronic
contexts and automates aspects of those procedures. In this paper, we describe an automated intelligent legal system for
easing both access and use of legal and other regulatory systems by citizens and eBusinesses. In particular, we consider
the matter of automated reasoning in such a system and present a legal reasoning engine design that addresses this
requirement. We argue that this design approach provides a firm basis for efficient delivery of self-tailored legal
eServices to end-users of all types. |
