Paper Abstract:      The diversity of the workforce is growing, people are becoming more knowledgeable due to easier access to information and an increase in education, people are travelling more experiencing different cultures and individuals have a growing number of interests. Learning from these diverse experiences and cultures through Life Long Learnin,g LLL, can be key to a firm’s competitive advantage. However SMEs are slow to uptake LLL as a core strategic tool. Reasons for this have been explored and many potential solutions developed, however, many SMEs remain unaware of the strategic importance of continued learning and the tangible benefits it can bring. Furthermore individuals are often unwilling to share their knowledge and experiences to promote learning as they see no personal benefit. This paper looks at the importance of promoting LLL to the individual and the SME and explores the use of readiness assessment and Communities of Practice (CoPs) as means of encouraging learning and supporting diversity in organisations.
