Paper Abstract:
|
This study explores how media preferences for team communication tasks change over time. Data was collected in a blended learning course on web engineering in which students were assigned to develop web based systems in small teams. In the beginning, the middle and the end of term they were asked to fill in an online form about the atmosphere in their teams and about media choice for communication among team members. Qualitative analysis of data showed that team atmosphere and media choice remained stable during the term. E-mail was the most frequently used communication medium within the teams, followed by face-to-face meetings, phone calls and instant messaging. Students reflections on media choice revealed factors influencing their media selection preferences, which were in line with pertinent theories. |
