Paper Abstract:      From a critical perspective on approaches to multi-sensory online shopping interfaces, we survey current UK-based practice and identify common trends in the use of sound within e-commerce websites. Recommendations drawn for future research centre upon the suggestion that, while audio is recognised to be an important and underused sensory medium with regard to online shopping, a critical approach should be taken towards designing audio features into online storefronts. Distinctions are highlighted between audio in simulated online shopping environments and audio adding to the richness of information available online. We suggest greater emphasis should be given to exploring the potential for the latter approach to play a role in assisting people to make informed purchases online and enjoy online shopping more.
