Paper Abstract:      Data is the new oil of the world and like any precious resource, it must be regulated for the benefit of people. The General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) directive is the first step in this direction. The embarkation to achieving conformity to the GDPR is to understand the needs of the user or the data subject. This paper focuses on the user research conducted with the data subjects, on their awareness and knowledge about data protection and GDPR. It highlights the insights from the interviews with the data subjects, and also provides, high level recommendations for designing, keeping data protection in mind, with the data subjects’ needs at the center of it. The insights and the recommendations indicate that user experience and design play a critical role in designing for trust and transparency.
