Paper Abstract:      Broadcast TV to mobile terminals is becoming a reality in many countries. This paper describes an implementation of a broadcast quiz game program targeted for pass-time purposes for the mobile user. The game show consists of a sequence of video clips, along with associated questions and answer alternatives displayed as text. The user’s answer is sent via SMS to a game server, which collects points and sends the final score back to the user. Adapting the quiz to the small screen of a mobile phone poses problems related to placement of the text relative to the video as well as displaying the text with sufficient resolution and clarity. Burning the text into the video before transmission has acceptable legibility, but does not allow flexibility in placement or language selection; hence generating the text overlay in the terminal is the preferred solution. Synchronizing the display of the text overlay with the video clip is also challenging. Current technology allows only approximate solutions to this problem. It is shown that the in-built user interface for interactivity on the terminal that we have tested (Nokia N96) is not well suited for a fast changing quiz game. Therefore a better suited client must be supplied with the quiz game for easier user interaction. A final problem is to correctly time the answer supplied by the user so that it is associated with the right question. The mobile phone’s in-built interactivity interface is not capable of solving this satisfactorily, so that a dedicated quiz game client is required also to handle this problem without any compromises.
