Paper Abstract:
|
The technical development of mobile applications poses specific challenges to participatory design. These challenges are exacerbated in resource-restricted settings where the exposure to technology is influenced by social, economic, and technology constraints. Participatory design requires the involvement of end-users in the collaborative design and development phases, and ideally in the context of use. In practice, the design phase is effective when design activities are conducted in the space of the users. The development phase requires specific technical skills not typically possessed by end-users. Their participation in co-development activities is therefore inhibited. This paper will explore the digital design and development practices in the work, design and development of a mobile health solution for home-based healthcare in a developing context to establish the level of interaction of participants. Human computer interaction for development is more than considering the involvement of users to design the user interfaces. It is not only users who interact with computers but during development the developers also interact with the computer components required for development and this aspect in a developing context needs to be better understood. |
