Paper Abstract:
|
Falling attention and acceptance of the church in society, resignations and falling memberships, lack of use of digital technology and interactive media in this context needs to be investigated and new approaches should be tested. In this Paper our contribution transfers the eucharist celebration into a data-driven slot machine using a Design Based Research methodology. The sensor and microcontroller-based artifact uses real time social media data analytics to start actuators and a laser engraving process, triggered by a coin slot of the user. With that interactive machine the religious service is translated into a design fiction and tested for its acceptance in a public exhibition with around 700 visitors. In doing so, we examined the question of whether religious processes can be automated and whether social media can be used in conjunction with a digital artifact in order to generate an intensive dispute about religion. The qualitative evaluation shows that almost all younger users reflected positively about the interactive exhibit while some of the 40+ religious people showed strong negative emotions. The possibility of generating new views on the faith and questions to the ecclesial community could be shown with such a controversial digital artefact. |
