Paper Abstract:      In this paper we present a study of a regional information system for diabetes care in Finland. The aim of the study was to discover the quality of the information by analyzing data content and the coherence of the diagnoses, medication data and examinations recorded in the database. Structured data were analyzed both statistically and qualitatively. Our study shows that the data in the information system researched have several quality weaknesses which are partly a result of unstructured data input, lack of knowledge of the functionality of the information system and inadequate cooperation in the care of the patient. Content quality and the coherence of patient information are a central part of good patient care and should therefore be paid more attention to. The quality of data can be improved through uniform specifications and the standardized integration of information systems, and above all by accurate information input and correct use of the information by health care professionals.
