Paper Abstract:
|
Many people take piano lessons, but many others are without a suitable teacher living close by. Traditionally, these people would have to move to a location where a suitable teacher is available, give up studying piano, or attempt to improve with only self-study. The system described here, named MusicPath, alleviates this problem by providing piano students with the capability of receiving interactive, real-time, master-class level instruction from remotely-located teachers. In addition, MusicPath also provides the ability for a teacher to give individual or group lessons at lower levels, and for musicians to collaborate with colleagues located anywhere, provided all parties involved have internet connections. MusicPath utilizes MIDI-capable acoustic pianos or MIDI keyboards, personal computers and a network connection to exchange MIDI data between the endpoints. The use of MIDI data eliminates the problems associated with trying to faithfully capture and replay piano music without the facilities of a recording studio. This transmission of MIDI data is augmented with an audio/video connection so that the participants can see and talk with each other. This paper gives an overview of the system and concentrates on the technical aspects of the system. |
