Paper Abstract:
|
In most European countries usage of mobile games is still at the level of a few percent compared to double digit
penetration rates of other forms of electronic gaming and widespread use of mobile services in general. Before addressing
the question why this is so, the article provides a typology of mobile gaming applications currently available and sets the
scope therein. As possible influences on the market development which stays by far short of its earlier forecasts, the
authors then discuss supply side as well as demand side aspects with a specific focus on the situation in Germany. As an
explanation for the slow pick-up and low absolute level of mobile gaming, the authors presume a combination of an
industry with an infrastructure unfavourable to innovation and an oversimplified concept of the “mobile game user”
leading to an unconvincing portfolio for a consumer who is far from being well understood in his or her age and gender
specific interests. Furthermore, the acceptance of mobile gaming applications appears at least as dependent on the cultural
context as other forms of gaming or the usage of mobile services in general. The authors finally derive questions
deserving further research when aiming at a prospering market. |
