Paper Abstract:
|
This study explores the influence of modality (picture-based vs. text-based) on second language vocabulary learning in
relation to testing modality, translational ambiguity and word class. Conducted with 160 monolingual adults, the research
investigated the effects of learning and testing modalities on learning of different types of words in the digital setting.
Results revealed a significant impact of testing modality, with the picture-text combination between learning and testing
outperforming congruent modality combinations. Additionally, text testing modality was found to be particularly
advantageous for verbs and prepositions. These findings suggest that while pictures might enhance encoding, text cues may
be more effective for retrieval in early second language learning stages and for certain word types. This research
underscores the need for nuanced language teaching strategies and the development of more effective digital learning tools. |
