Paper Abstract:
|
Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) has been a buzz phrase within K-12 education for some time. The newest
version of this is Second Life; a virtual world/simulation that is limited only by the imagination and creativity of the user.
Second Life implements many aspects of traditional collaborative environments but also incorporates new functionality
and aspects that are found in gaming and social networking applications. Along with the potential of Second Life to
transform the traditional classroom setting, there are also considerable risks associated with the technology that need to
be addressed. The opportunity to fully evaluate the effectiveness of virtual worlds for classroom applications will be a
challenge for policy makers and educators in the years to come. |
