Paper Abstract:      Learning a proper lifestyle is crucial for the prevention and the management of chronic diseases. Nutrition is arguably one of the most important controllable factors of lifestyle, and since it is very hard to change, support form mobile information technology can be effective. There are several dietary logging and analysis applications available, but a systematic assessment of their accuracy is usually missing. The paper investigated the practical applicability and attainable accuracy of the Lavinia android based lifestyle support application in a small scale clinical study involving 17 diabetic patients in a rehabilitation hospital. The results showed that after some practice, the average time needed for logging decreases to ca. 5.5 minutes a day even for elderly and technology naïve users. The most important types of logging errors were omissions and magnitude errors of weight estimations. In our next trial we provide the patients with kitchen scales and also use body-worn heart rate sensors to track physical activity combined with manual logging.
