Paper Abstract:
|
This study investigated whether the introduction of WebCT based material enhanced the sense of community in students
on a Joint Honours programme. Two groups of students studying two different subjects on the programme were studied.
In one group traditional teaching was supplemented with WebCT based material (lecture notes, assignment briefings,
discussion pages etc) whereas the other used just traditional teaching. At the start of the course there was no significant
difference in the sense of community of the two groups. However after one year the group with supplementary WebCT
material had a significantly greater sense of community than the group that did not. These findings are surprising given
the minimal use of communication/socialisation tools within WebCT and raise questions about why a blended learning
approach increases a sense of community. |
