Paper Abstract:      This paper describes the use of a wiki for collaborative requirements engineering. It discusses the rationale for the design of the wiki activities and the processes that were put in place to deal with anticipated problem areas based on earlier experiences of team working in a distributed environment. It then examines the issues that have arisen and the steps that are being taken to improve the student experience. A significant issue is that students’ expectations of distance and flexible learning are in conflict with collaborative activities, and the paper discusses the steps we have taken to minimize this effect. Nevertheless, we have found that students discover that collaborative learning, mediated by a wiki, does enhance their learning. The paper also discusses the need for a wiki to be supported by other tools if it is to realise its potential as a collaborative learning environment. In particular, a wiki must be supported by an appropriate discussion medium. The paper should be of interest to others wishing to incorporate the use of wikis in their teaching.
