Paper Abstract:
|
There are many issues in education today, one of being the engagement of students so as to promote effective learning and increase student retention. In this paper we examine steps that have been taken to achieve this with the Social Constructivist approach of group team work in the area of computer programming, which has been one of the problem areas. This is carried out with the constructivist methodology of learning by doing and the increased promotion of dialogue, together with the use of tutors and moderators so as to promote and drive the learning process and provide a good reflective tool. In the three years of experiments into the effective use of collaboration in the class room and on the web, we examined the ideal team size, and personality types which must exist, the importance of the relevance of the curriculum, feedback and the game metaphor as an important means by which to motivate the users and teams. Further to this we also examined the quality of the dialogue and the use of the moderator and use of user supports. The overall aim being to get students more engaged and motivated in a game like environment and in so doing making friends which in turn will help them feel they belong and contribute actively in obtaining the set goals laid down. Through the team metaphor the users brainstorm each other and learn to use supports effectively for additional points |
