Paper Abstract:      This paper describes the development of a location-based service, created to support the distribution of digitalized maps, for operations requiring mobile coordinated positioning. An example of such kind of operations is the coordination of fire-fighter crews in a fire control scenario. In this operations each user, in a group, needs to know in real-time his position and the position of his group. A user friendly system would represent this information on a map. As the user approaches the map border, new maps will have to be downloaded, to replace/complement the older ones. The system described in this paper takes advantage of the integration of a mobile communications terminal with a GPS receiver. These portable units are connected through GPRS/UMTS/Wi-Fi and exchange positioning information, map files, text messages and sketches created by the users. Position and sketches are displayed over digitalized map images or satellite photos. The map images are automatically downloaded as the user moves. Field trials, conducted at the faculty campus, are presented.
