Paper Abstract:
|
The following paper shows the results of a research that started at the Trinity College GIS labs during in October 2004.
The research respond to the project title Creating a lifelong learning framework for geographic information systems
education: circumventing a digital divide that was financially supported by the Bologna Desk at the Irish university.
The original aim of this research was to evaluate the possibility of developing a new postgraduate course on Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) based on an e-learning platform. Two questionnaires were
defined to collect information via the Internet. The first one related to the situation of digital divide in relation to the
Geographic Information Technologies (GIT´s) and the Bologna Agreement development. The second one was focused on
collecting information about the needs and preferences of potential customers of GIS postgraduate courses. Finally, an
inventory of the existing postgraduate courses on GIT was carried out. Conclusions show how important the digital
divide is at the university level in relation to GIS and how relevant it is nowadays face to face learning even for those
people who most know how to use technology based on computers. |
