Paper Abstract:
|
Research on the nature of experiences that people have in entertaining Virtual Reality is scarce. One line of reasoning
leads one to expect an intensification of entertainment emotions. Another hunch is that the experience is qualitatively
different from non-immersive experiences. In this paper we present a study comparing emotional responses to a short
movie under conditions of low and high immersion. Two kinds of emotions were measured after a low immersive 3-D
presentation, and after a high immersive Full Cave presentation. The results show that compared to low immersive ones,
highly immersive presentations not only tend to intensify all motions, but they also induce a generalised pleasurable
emotional state, in which separate emotions seem to be fused. A tentative description of Full Cave movie experiences is
given, raising new questions concerning altered states of consciousness in immersive entertaining VR. |
