Paper Abstract:      Active learning plays a dominant role in contemporary education. Many effective techniques and practices have been described, but usually they are directed at face-to-face classes. In this paper we investigate some of these techniques and practices, and apply them to an asynchronous distance education context. We describe in which way these techniques can be adapted, in order to take into account the affordances and limitations of the virtual classroom.
