Paper Abstract:
|
Exposure to sexual content in the media has been associated with sexual behavior among youth. This paper explores how
youth, content analysts, and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) differ in their perceptions of the amount
of sexual content in 40 popular movies. Youth reported seeing less sexual content in movies than do content analysts or
the MPAA. Theoretical implications of these findings particularly related to a habituation effect and desensitization are
considered, and methodological recommendations for future studies are discussed. |
