Paper Abstract:
|
The risks inherent in AI and its current pace of development and launch are increasingly acknowledged by industry leaders. These risks force us to reflect on AI's role in society, and what regulatory framework we need avoid undesired developments. This paper addresses (1) the crossroads we are at and (2) why we should act now, and (3) discusses regulatory efforts afoot or under consideration in China, the US and the EU. It concludes that particularly article 4a (1) of the (draft) EU AI law, which is based on a clear and coherent vision of AI's role in society and sets legally enforceable standards for AI developers and professional AI users, may turn out to be an effective, technology neutral tool to ensure these developers and users err on the side of caution in developing and deploying new AI tools. |
