Paper Abstract:      This research aims to evaluate the value that web service can make in allowing heterogeneous system to be efficiently connected. Initially from the literature a technology road map of web services is put forward. It will deliver a set of guidelines in order to allow IT professionals to efficiently evaluate the merit or otherwise of deploying web services for a given problem domain. It reports on the findings of action research conducted within a large telecommunications company. These findings in conjunction with the proposed road map are couched as key challenges to be explored by potential adopters of web services in selecting and developing web services within their organisation. The Critical Success Factors in harnessing these challenges are designed to assist in making sense of the numerous choices, especially in the selection of standards, development frameworks, models and tools towards successful development and deployment of web services technology.
