Paper Abstract:      This paper deals with the problem of selecting an appropriate open standard for content management in a network of embedded systems. We compare several technologies in order to recommend one that is well suited for a company with limited experience of working with embedded systems. The following open standards were compared: 1) a standard database with SQL as an application programming interface (API), 2) Java Servlets with HTML as an API and 3) XML-RPC as an API. We experimented with a gas turbine control system in a Controller Area Network (CAN) based automation network. The task was to log data from an embedded system. In order to accomplish this we used the TINI-platform developed by Dallas Semiconductor as a gateway. Our work shows that the SQL approach is well suited for a company with less experience in working with embedded systems. It gives the company a simple and well-defined API to develop applications and manage their content.
