Paper Abstract:      The complexity of business applications causes problems for both the user and application designer. Developers need a set of principles to guide them in creating highly usable business software. This paper presents a novel approach to business application user interface design. We have defined a small set of patterns which capture the common characteristics of interactive business applications. These “business application user interface patterns” (BUIPs) incorporate both task models and abstract user interface elements We tested the utility of our patterns by evaluating realworld business software to see how well it follows these patterns. Our results show significant consistency between our pattern set and the actual interfaces of commercial and open source business applications. We also have some evidence that user interface screens which closely match our patterns are easier to understand than screens which do not.
