Paper Abstract:
|
Universities are in a unique position from which to make significant changes to how buildings and precincts are designed and operated to support the movement towards a sustainable future. Free from some of the largest constraints in commercial green building design such as let-ability, and split incentives for financial payback, universities can test and implement innovative solutions developed with the support of building users, and the backing of in-house research initiatives. This paper outlines some of the key arguments towards an onus on universities to lead the way to a sustainable built environment, as well as some of the barriers unique to universities which are currently stopping this growth and opportunities to overcome many of these. A case study of a small office building at the National University of Singapore has been used to demonstrate how a university can stepped outside the local conforms of building design resulting in a building which uses significantly less energy than even best practise green office buildings. |
