Paper Abstract:
|
Mentoring or social support is location and time independent. Although tutors and learners encounter problems that may
need immediate attention and are time-driven, the lack of social presence awareness makes it difficult to provide them
with context sensitive and anywhere, anytime support as they traverse varied locations. Our conceptual model is a
mentoring environment that supports the mobility of a tutor, learner and expert personnel. The central feature of the
mobile mentoring environment is the provision of social presence awareness for the purposes of instant opportunistic and
appropriate interactive consultation. The paper, which reports from the pilot, concludes that social presence afforded by
mobile instant messaging could successfully maintain social networks constituted for anywhere, anytime mentoring. |
