Paper Abstract:

The advance in mobile technologies and the introduction of Mobile Web 2.0 has precipitated a proliferation of social applications. There are many potential opportunities to use online mobile technologies for the purposes of education. The objective of this research was to define a set of guidelines to underpin the effective development of a mobile online learning community for marginalised youth and to determine its content specifications. Reengagement of marginalised youth would allow them to become net contributors to their society and the economy. It is proposed that effective implementation of education through a social platform delivered through mobile technology could act as an agent for this social change. The research used both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in order to establish an understanding of how to develop an online mobile community and content to engage marginalised young people in learning. The findings indicated nine key factors for the success of an online learning environment: purpose, participation, technology, netiquette, user-friendly design, roles, subgroups, trust and identity. Further research indicated the content specification to be incorporated within the community, this includes: functional literacy, functional numeracy, functional ICT and specific personal attributes. The mobile online learning environment could offer a range of engaging content designed according to the identified needs of the audience and would be community centred to encourage meaningful interactions between users. Due to the mobility of the technology, both the community and the content would be accessible anywhere. |
