Paper Abstract:      Many state-of-the-art software development processes are based on model driven software development (MDSD) utilizing the Unified Modelling Language (UML). To allow for an efficient model driven development process, suitable for industrial-scale development teams, models have to be accessed simultaneously by multiple developers in order to work with them. UML models are usually represented in a graphical from, with the attendant benefits of visual representations. Hence, it seems appropriate for distributed development processes that merging versions of models should also be facilitated graphically. This paper discusses several current academic and industrial approaches to visual model merging, before describing a new approach that merges UML class diagrams visually. The approach was trialled on industrial examples taken from a range of real-time software projects.
