Paper Abstract:
|
With the global emergence of new electronics, information, and far-reaching communication technologies, the movement
towards adoption of E-Government systems has recently inspired governments world-wide to be aware of the potential
opportunities of this phenomenon hoping to: reduce operating costs for both businesses and citizens; provide citizens and
businesses with more convenient access to on-line government services; improve the quality of government services
delivery; and increase effectiveness and efficiency in the public sector organisations .Jordan was placed 68thout of 191
member countries in the 2005 rankings of the UN global E-Government readiness report. While the progress in
undertaking the transition into an information society is still modest in comparison to more advanced Western countries,
there is a clear sign that Jordan is looking forward to being ahead in the region with the development and progress in all
aspects of modern life, including building a state of the art E-Government infrastructure that will gradually move the life
of Jordanian people into the communication and networked age.
This paper attempts to reach an objective evaluation through reviewing the efforts and current achievements done by the
government of Jordan to integrate emerging and existing modern information and communication technologies (ICTs)
especially the Internet into its agencies. Examining briefly the challenges encountered in implementing E-Government
initiatives in Jordan, as well as the potential opportunities experienced in the context of a Jordanian society. In addition,
the understanding of the current status of E-Government in Jordan can help practitioners and researchers in the country to
pursue development of the public sector organisations on one hand, and would be generally of importance for Jordan's
economic future success on the other hand. However, since the development of an integrated E-Government
infrastructure is a necessary issue for effectiveness and competency in the information age, the findings and implications
of this review study reveal Jordan is still far behind some in utilizing ICTs for delivering government services and
information on-line. |
