Paper Abstract:      When building a lightweight ontology we found difficulties applying current methodologies. In our experience we consider specially difficult the three aspects in which we focus: to solve the lack of understanding of the domain terms and the lack of experts, the need to facilitate the process of ontology definition in a formal representation language by non-computer user and the need of structuring the whole process of using guidelines, tasks and support materials. As a complement to the other methodologies of the survey we propose a hybrid pragmatic methodology that helps to overcome those problematic aspects by three combined approaches. The first one is, as alternative knowledge sources, to obtain relevant concepts by processing written sources of knowledge applying Information Retrieval techniques or processing the structure of documents in XML format. The second one is to create a two-layered knowledge representation: a user layer with an easy graphical language based on conceptual maps and an internal layer with a formal representation language based on Description Logics. And the third one is to define a refinement cycle to build up the ontology in an incremental manner. The cycle is based on the three main conceptual strategies, top-down, bottom-up and middle-out, applied in different phases, including a final phase with a manual task by the user.
