Paper Abstract:      This study examines the effects of fairness perception and belief of organizational ownership on an individual’s propensity to share knowledge. Based on the theory of information sharing (Constant et al., 1994) and the equity theory (Adam, 1985), a theoretical model was developed and tested using structural equation analysis, and the effects of fairness perception on sharing explicit and tacit knowledge were compared. Results indicate that distributive justice has greater impact on explicit knowledge sharing than tacit knowledge sharing. In contrast, procedural justice is more important than distributive justice in predicting individual’s propensity to share tacit knowledge. These findings provide supports that attitude toward knowledge sharing is moderated by the nature of knowledge shared. Also as hypothesized, fairness perception were found to be important predictors of employee’s ownership beliefs of knowledge and knowledge sharing propensity.
