Paper Abstract:      The recent announcement by MIT that they are not abandoning their "open courseware" initiative but assessing what academic programs they could bring online behind a "pay wall" to develop new revenue streams to help out with their budget crisis has brought a lot of attention to the question of "to what extent and in what manner does distance education fit into the overall academic enterprise in a traditional research university?" At many large and medium research universities, with the changing student demographic, increased mobility, enhanced student technological sophistication and rapidly changing job market requiring periodic professional development, the need for high quality continuing and lifelong professional education is clear and growing not only nationally but internationally. For many universities the question is not "if" but "when" will top tier institutions begin to think strategically about distance education as a complementary and value added element of the core academic enterprise. This paper reviews some of the issues, problems, and trends facing the growth of distance education at private research universities in the United States.
