Paper Abstract:
|
The development of higher education in the direction, where increasing numbers of students are educated with shrinking resources, generates problems as students do not have access to frequent supervision. This will most probably have a negative effect on students´ performance, and may in worst case prevent students from achieving study results. In this work, a web based tutoring support, Thesis Web Dialogue, is presented. The aim of this support tool is to facilitate and reinforce supervision and thesis-writing by enhancing frequent dialogue between student and supervisor. The support tool may be used in distance education as well as a complement in traditional campus courses. In a pilot study, in which seven lecturers and thirteen students participated, the Thesis Web Dialogue was tested and evaluated as a support for thesis writing at undergraduate level. The results showed that the virtual private supervision room was experienced mostly as an exclusive and safe place for students and supervisor. One important observation was that supervisor and student must have an agreement about how tutorial dialogue should be applied. Based on the pilot study, the Thesis Web Dialogue will be improved and the new version will then be tested within a more representative population. |
