Paper Abstract:      The paper describes an empirical investigation aimed at analyzing and comparing the level of usability of multi-modal and non multi-modal results interfaces of search engines. An experimental Internet searching platform, named AVBro2, was created appositely for this experiment. Five interfaces offered by this tool were used as basis for this experiment, which involved a total number of fifty users. Every participant was required to perform three Internet query activities for each of the five interfaces. Every query activity was based on the finding of specific information with the use of an exact set of keywords. The outcome of this study demonstrated that experimental interfaces based on a multi-modal approach or on a set of appropriate visual metaphors for browsing retrieved Internet results provided overall a higher level of usability than traditional interfaces based on text. Obtained results also demonstrated the high level of functionality of certain visual and audio metaphors for conveying specific information of retrieved documents.
