Paper Abstract:      Ubiquitous computing requires a kind of context aware application such as RFID. The purpose of this paper is to identify roles of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in ubiquitous computing to provide a better understanding of RFID technology. From an extensive literature search, four RFID role types were classified: Auto Identifier, Trigger to Data Processing, Data Carrier, and Sensor. We also analysed the relationship between RFID role types and ubiquitous services. The proposed role types could be used as a lens to evaluate RFID technology precisely and offer useful guidelines to apply RFID at the proper application area.
