Paper Abstract:      Due to the innovative nature of the resulting product information systems development (ISD) involves a high degree of improvisation. There are however only a few studies which investigate the role of improvisation based on detailed empirical data. The research described in this paper contributes to filling in this gap. It is based on a case study of an ISD project in a large Danish software company. We analyze the project in terms of improvisation, and in particular discuss 6 significant improvisations and their impact on the course of the project and its outcome. For this purpose we apply a theoretical framework of improvised action which in particular relies on Claudio Ciborra’s work as theoretical perspective. Our work demonstrates the usefulness of Ciborra’s conceptualization of improvisation and increases the understanding of the role and effect of improvisation on ISD practice.
