Paper Abstract:
|
This article examines teachers' perceptions and practices about creative use of Information Communications Technology (ICT) for learning and teaching. We argue that while ICT may be used as an extension of other teaching tools, it also has the potential to develop new ways of doing things, thus developing creative attitudes in learning. Teachers' opinions where collected through an online survey which gathered data from 27 European Union Member States (EU27) and teaching in obligatory schooling (ISCED levels 1 and 2). This amounted to a total of 7,659 responses. Almost all surveyed teachers have an encompassing view of creativity: 98% believe that creativity can be applied to every domain of knowledge and 96% that creativity can be applied to every school subject. A high proportion of teachers claim that ICT has improved their teaching (85%) and that ICT can be used to enhance creativity (91%). Notwithstanding the high importance attributed to technology, its use remains mainly teacher-led and the pedagogies behind are not necessarily creative and innovative. Only half of the teachers (53%) claim to let their students use a wide range of technologies to learn. Moreover, the potential of social technologies and media remains untapped and few of teachers recognized the importance of mobile phones and digital games for learning. Teachers claimed to need more support and are willing to undergo more training in order to be more creative and conversant with technology. |
