Paper Abstract:
|
Assessment for learning should be part of effective planning of learning, teaching and assessment (LTAS). As such a teacher's planning should provide opportunities for both learner and teacher to obtain and use information about progress towards learning goals. It also has to be flexible to respond to emerging ideas such as elearning and blended learning. Planning should include strategies to ensure that learners understand the goals they are pursuing and the criteria that will be applied in assessing their work. Much of what teachers and learners do in classrooms can be described as assessment. These assessment processes are an essential part of everyday classroom practice and involve both teachers and learners in reflection, dialogue and decision making. However, many learners have problems with assessment. For example, what exactly is required, concentration, exam phobia, stress, problems with self-confidence and group-work problems. Furthermore, over the past few years innovations such as blended learning and consequently blended assessment have become more popular with educators. As such, these issues conspire to confuse and possibly disorientate the student. How can they cope with all these aspects of learning, teaching, assessment and then revision? In an effort to understand these problems facing todays learners, this paper discusses the research project currently being undertaken by the author to establish the benefits of developing a blended e-revision framework and package to assist a group of third year undergraduate students at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). This package is intended to guide the student through the assessment and examination processes on their module enabling them to access technology enhanced revision materials, for both coursework and examination at any time. Easily accessible, this new facility should provide students with an avenue to do their revision activities more effectively. |
