Paper Abstract:
|
Present usability evaluation methods focus on the semantic influence of the text links and the impact of graphics conventions and layout locations. In this paper we report a study on whether the location expectations of a web widget are influenced by the location of other widgets. The main experiment combines both eye tracking and behavioral study on matched sets of three versions of web pages. For each version, web widgets like navigation, ads, search, content and login, are placed in alternate locations. The participants are tested on these versions to see if the location expectations of web widgets are dependent on other web widgets. Our results reveal a number of interdependencies between some common and essential web widgets, which may be exploited to design more effective user interfaces. |
