Paper Abstract:      The objective of this research is to explore the intercultural communication by visual representation on web pages. This study analyzes 649 pieces of image provided by 19 homogeneous environmental Web sites of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) from Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland. It can be concluded that great differences are exhibited in the way of visual representations and classification of visual images such as photographs, graphics, figures and tables. Promotion for environmental conservation activities in the United States Web sites is more likely to use non-representational images, such as cartoons and drawings. Japan Web sites tend to show qualitative or quantitative graphs and diagrams. German Web sites promote their environmental concerns through non-representational photographs, whereas Web sites in the United Kingdom use photographs of current events for the same purpose. Finally, Swiss Web sites offer artistic representational images, scientific graphs, and symbolic photographs all together. This study provides evidence for intercultural communication by visual representation via the Internet.
