Paper Abstract:
|
Students and staff within Higher Education already make extensive use of mobile phone technology for communicating
by voice, Short Messaging Service (SMS), digital photography and video in support of all aspects of their personal lives.
Nevertheless this same technology is considerably under utilised in support of education. There is, therefore, significant
potential to extend the use of this device. In particular, if the mobile phone can provide an interface to their online
learning environment a whole new dimension, in respect of remote access to education, can be unlocked.
This paper will explore the uptake and use of mobile technologies at the University of Ulster. By considering both
student and staff perspectives on the use of technology to support the educational process, a number of innovative
interventions have been put in place to improve communication with students and enhance the student learning
experience. |
