Paper Abstract:      This paper studies the effectiveness and acceptance of student-initiated curriculum planning, visualization and assessment for mobile learning. The objective of the system is to find suitable pedagogy for mobile learning and the factors that would create a conducive mobile learning environment to help the learners develop problem-solving skills. The subject of the course for the case study is Java programming language since there are fewer examples of programming modules for mobile learning. A prototype application is developed and tested in order to investigate the above- mentioned goals. This prototype allows the learners to plan their learning session activities by themselves and learn with the help of visualized and interactive contents. Assessments also correlate with the course material in this system. Moreover, this mobile learning application is integrated into a Web-based portal that enables the student to access course material through both mobile devices and web browsers on desktop machines. The resulting ubiquitous environment provides the learners with more flexibility and features like forum that enables them to interact and collaborate with learning peers. Findings indicate that self-initiated curriculum planning, visualization and correlated assessment have found acceptance by users, and can enhance their problem-solving ability. Collaboration with learning peers is also proven to be an effective means in the learning process.
