Paper Abstract:      Immediate access to a wide range of information may not always present an optimal interface for human performance. We demonstrate some advantages in human performance when the structure of the interface is tailored to the adaptive nature of cognition. Here we discuss how small changes in the cost of accessing information – the time, physical and mental cost of accessing information – can effect powerful changes in cognitive processing strategy that can be advantageous. Increasing information access cost encourages more memory-based planning that results in improved recall for task-relevant information, more efficient problem solving and greater resilience to interruption. These findings have implications for display design.
